Insurance Awareness Day: Chiropractic Coverage Explained
Do you know what your health insurance actually covers when it comes to chiropractic care, massage therapy, and other […]
Each August, healthcare professionals, families, and communities across the country come together to recognize Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month. While SMA is considered a rare disease, the impact it has on individuals and families is profound. At Amesbarry Chiropractic, we stand in support of those affected by SMA and believe that awareness, education, and compassion are vital tools in improving quality of life—for everyone.
Let’s take a closer look at what SMA is, why this month matters, and how spinal health plays a role in the broader conversation about muscular wellness and neurological care.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a genetic condition that affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord—the nerve cells responsible for communicating with muscles. When these motor neurons deteriorate, it leads to progressive muscle weakness and atrophy (shrinking of muscle tissue).
There are several types of SMA, ranging from severe forms that present in infancy to milder versions that appear in adolescence or adulthood. While the condition can significantly affect movement, breathing, and posture, early diagnosis and modern treatments have made a huge difference in outcomes for many people.
Some key facts about SMA:
While chiropractic care is not a treatment or cure for SMA, we believe it’s important to talk about spinal health in the context of this condition and others like it. The spine isn’t just a structural component of the body—it houses and protects the central nervous system, including the spinal cord and nerves that branch out to the rest of the body.
Supporting neuromuscular health starts with education and awareness. For many families, early physical therapy, mobility tools, and spinal support can help manage symptoms and improve comfort. Chiropractors who are trained in neuromusculoskeletal health can be part of a broader healthcare team that supports mobility, comfort, and alignment—especially in cases involving spinal curvature (such as scoliosis, which can be common in SMA patients).
SMA Awareness Month gives us a chance to:
Even if you or your loved ones aren’t directly affected by SMA, this is an opportunity to expand our understanding, deepen our empathy, and support health equity for all.
💜 Learn the signs of neuromuscular disorders—especially in infants and young children.
💜 Donate or share information from reputable SMA foundations and advocacy groups.
💜 Ask questions about spinal and muscular health at your next chiropractic appointment.
💜 Wear cream or ivory during the month of August to show your support!
At Amesbarry Chiropractic, we’re passionate about keeping spines strong, aligned, and supported—whether we’re working with young athletes, desk warriors, or those managing lifelong conditions. While we don’t treat SMA directly, we believe in the power of spinal health, community advocacy, and compassionate care.
